Main task - post production - Editing Diary.

15th Febuary 2011
Beacuse we have managed to get all of our main shots done we are now able to start editing our film together and make start making everything for post production.

So far we have managed to simply name all of our clips and then pick some of the best shots and put them into the order that we wanted. Over the next couple of lessons we will be able to really get into editing and start making our film more professional as well as making our extra things to put on to our dvd. Also to make our poster and any other artwork we need for our final dvd.

Main task - production -The final cast and crew.

Because one of our cast members bailed out on us last minute our cast changed:

Detective Charile Kane - Johnny Colard

Paul Rawlings - Ethan Grice

Jane Rawlings - Kerry Grice

Victoria Sweetine Lauren Hughes

The crew was made up of me and Ashleigh who did certain roles:

Camera - Sami Bean

Lighting - Ash Hughes

Director - Sami Bean

Procucer - Ash Hughes

Main task - production - Filming evaluation.

Yesterday (Saturday 12th Febuary) me and Ash filmed all the pieces we needed to for our final task. We also had Ash's camera set up so that we could film the behind the scenes pieces to also put on our dvd. As soon as we go back i will be putting all of the scenes onto the computer so that we can start editing.

As well as filming we took some test shots of the location and also the photos of things that we wanted to make the movie poster, the sticker for the dvd and anything else we choose to make.

As preperation for this i will be looking over the editing files on the school website to help me edit the film.

Overall, i beleive that me and Ash worked together well as a team and as well with the actors. This was good as it means that hopefully we got the best results on the day.

Main task - pre production - Casting.

After talking to Ashleigh, we eventually came up with the actors that wanted to play the parts for us.

Detective Charile Kane - George Garner

Paul Rawlings - Ethan Grice

Jane Rawlings - Kerry Grice

Victoria Sweetine Lauren Hughes

There are the parts of the two daughters also, we have decided that Chloe Grice and Sara Bean will be playing these parts as they are young enough. These are only small parts.

Main task - pre prodiction - Victoria Sweetine, character biography.

This is our femme fatal chracter. Just like the other three of the main chracters in our film noir I drew up a spider diagram to help me work out there profile.

Childhood
Victoria was the only child of Howard and Elizabeth. Her mother and father were classed as lucky. When Howard was a teenager he was in a nasty accident and was told that he may never be able to father children. Howard had always wanted to have a little girl to spoil. On the 23rd of Febuary he got his wish when Elizabeth gave birth to a baby girl; Victoria. Victoria lived with her parents in a big house. She had her own bedroom that was of course all done up. Whatever she wanted all she had to do was aske her father and her wish was granted. This was all possible as, hard as they tried, Howard and Elizabeth could not conceive for the second time. This meant that Howard made Victoria her world. She was in all cases daddy's little girl. Although she got on well with her mother and her mother loved her very much, it was always daddy that she ran too.
Unfortunatly, when Victoria was only 12 her father died tradgecially. Elizabeth and Victoria were heart broken. Without Howard they could not afford to stay in the house so they had to sell up and leave. Elizabeth tried to talk to Victoria on many occassions about how she felt. However Victoria did not want to talk anymore. She closed up. Took herself away from her mother and her friends. Talking only when she could not get out of the conversation.
The death of her father caused Victoria to realise that although she may love something with all her heart, it can still be taken from her. She was not the same girl ever again.

Schooling
Before her father died he paid for Victoria to go to her nearest private school. He beleived that only the best was good enough for her daughter. After he died however, the school knew that it may be possible that this young girl would not be able to afford to come to the school anymore. They dedcied that the best option was to let her sit a test, this was the same test that all students had to tale to see if the were eligable to get a scholarship. Victoria was a bright student and passed the test with ease.
Not only was Victoria a bright student that excelled in all her lessons and showed incrediable promise, she was also a very popular membeer of all of her classes. As she turned into a young women she was invited out to all the parties. 'It was not a party unles Victoria Sweetine was there.' she was once told. This made her happy. At least there were people in her life that cared for her and wanted to be around her.
She never really spoke about her dad to any of her friends, even the ones she counted as the close ones. It was easier that way. It stopped the hurt contiuning to penetrate her.
She passed her exams easily, however she had never had a thought to what she wanted to do with herself after school. She knew she wanted to do some good in the world but not didn't know how to do such thing.

Family
Victoria is classes as one of the most beautiful people of the city. She is famous to be the one that sets the trends and is followed by anyone who knows her. She lives on her own, no one knows of any daughters or sons. There is also no other family member hanging around. No husband. No long-term boyfriend. Just dates when ever she fancied or when she had a special function or ocasion to attend. Occasionaly her mother will vist her, however, since Victoria moving out she has become further distanted to her mother. Her father was the one that always did everything for her. Victoria and her mother were never quite sure how to re-connect after Howard died. Howard was the glue that kept the family together.

Proffesion
Although Victoria's reall profession is not formally known to anyone but herself and the Detective she chooses to have other jobs to keep up her persona. Victoria decided to work in a cafe for a fair amount of time after she left school. This (according to her mother) seemed like a waste of talent. But to Victoria, it got her through. Soon she had saved up enough money to move out. The cafe job kept her going for a few years. However when she had a place of her own she realised that the cafe job would not keep her completly afloat. She managed to get herself a job behind a bar. Her good looks and sexy walk ment that she was a hit with all the regular men. The word soon went around about the new bar maid and it became one of the most hotest joints in town.
This is the bar where she met Detctive Kane for the first time. She instantly knew that this was not your average drinker down the pub. He would ask more questions then what was classed as normal. Aventually Victoria brought herself to ask the Detective what he was after. By some miracle he coose to tell her. She could see that maybe there was somthing in this for her. She had always wanted to do somthing for the better. She met the Detective away from the pub, he explained all about a murder that he was trying to investigate. He beleived it had something to do with the local gang, but he couldn't be sure as they would never talk to him. She knew that it would be dangerous, but she liked that idea of being in danger. The rush that she would get from the adrenaline of helping the Detective out. She agreed to help. She would get the knoweldge and the eveidence that the Detective needed.
It worked wonderfully. A sort of patnership was born. Victoria never looked back.

Main task - pre production - Jane Raulings, character biography.

Childhood
Jane Clumbler was born to Peter and Scarlet. She is the eldest of the two daughters. Their next daughter coming along a year and half later then Jane, she was named Catherine.

Jane, being the eldest, was the one that was depended on to set an example to her younger sister. This meant that Jane learnt housework chores at a young age. She would do the clothes washing, cooking and cleaning, as well as going to the shops to get any groceries that her mother asked for.

Her parents were married two years before they had both Jane and Catherine. Peter was a door-to-door salesman. Always wanted to be a succesful buisnessman but never had the determination to get up and make this a reality. He met Jane's mother when he first moved to the same part of LA as her. He happened to live just up the road, one night when he was walking back to his flat after a long day of being on his feet, he quite litterally bumbed into Scarlet on the corner of the street. He instantly felt attracted to her and set about finding out who she was and how he could marry her.
Eventually, after many meetings, Peter eventually got up the corage to go to Scarlets father and ask for her hand in marrige. They got married on Scarlet's birthday, a perfect christmas present.

Peter continued his door-to-door slaesman job, never getting up the determination to go and see what other jobs he could find himself. He was a very safe man. Jane's mother was a school teacher at the local kindergarten. She loved her job, this meant that she could not only teach her own children the ways of life and see them enjoy learning new things but could also see the other children of the comunity getting this too.

Schooling
Jane and her sister Catherine went to their mothers kindergarten. However, when they were too old for this school they moved onto a state high school as their parents did not have enough money to send them to a private school.

Jane got a average education, she enjoyed school more than her sister, Catherine. She did well in her studies and the teachers were always happy with her work. She would often be top of the class, and if not she would always try harder for the next exam.

Her lesson that she most throughly enjoyed though was Physical Education. She enjoyed being outside the classroom and being out playing sports with the other girls. Being fit was something her mother and father always made sure that their daughters knew about. Catherine was never all that big in the exercise unlike Jane. Catherine always felt like she was living in Jane's shadow. Jane always sucelded in anything she tried.

Family
Jane met Paul Raulings not long after she left home at the age of 17. She had a small appartment flat in the inner city where she worked at a little book store. She wanted to be a teacher as soon as she got the money to go to night school to get the qualifications. Soon after meeting Paul she had many dates with him and ended up getting married. Soon after the marrige her father beacme terminaly ill. They would visit her father and mother as much as they could. Jane fell pregnant with Sarah a few months after her father was diagnosed. Luckily, he lived long enough to see Sarah's birth, however, Jane's next daughter Carolyn never got to see her grandfather as he died when Jane was 3 months pregnant with her.

Profession
Jane's father left her a small amount of money that she used to go to night school to get her qualifications she needed to become a teacher, although her husband could have afforderd her to go years ago, she wanted to do it on her own, not on her husbands fortune. Unfortunatly Jane did not get the grades that allowed her too become a school teacher so she put herself forward to help out in the classroom instead. This meant that she could work in the place that she always wanted, and therefore she was always there to pick the girls up from their day of school and also holidays.

Main task - pre production - Reserch - 40's American slang.

After doing my first script i realised that i had not used any of the slang that is used so well in film noir classics. Therefore i knew that i needed to research into it before i could start changing the language of my chracters.

I put a search in Google and it came up with: http://www.angelfire.com/comics/howardfineandhoward/20sTo40sPhrases.html
This website was very helpful as it gave me lots of different 40's American slang that my chracters would have used at the time. These included:
-Dame- A Woman
-Big Cheese - The most important or influential person; boss. Same as big shot.
-Ossified - a drunk person.
-Sheba - A woman with sex appeal (from the move Queen of Sheba) or (e.g. Clara Bow).

Main task - pre production - Script writing.

After doing a scripting lesson in class today we have been told to go away and write our production script (a draft script) for the next lesson. I have done the first draft, i am sure that there will be many more production scripts before we get to the shooting script (the script used while filming). I think that the script i have written is a little long, however tomorrow i will talk to thr other member in the group and see what they think of it.

Here are some print screens of the script as it is now...

Main task - pre production - Research - My poster spider diagram.

Main task - pre production - Reserch - Film noir posters.

The following are posters that i have looked at to be able to come up with a spider diagram that will help me and my group to make poster for our movie.

Main task - pre production - Location shots.

After talking to Kerry (one of the owners of the house) and getting permission to film in the house i took some photo's of some of the house.

The front of the house.

The front of the inside of the house (the main living room).

The back of the house.

There is also a office and upstairs space that i could not take photo's of at the time. However if need be i can get some more pictures of these places. Also there is the garden space that we could use.

Main task - pre production - Location ideas.

Me and Ashleigh have agreed to start looking for location ideas now. I have been able to in the last couple of hours to find a brilliant loaction to use as the big house that we need. I have also asked the owner of the house if we can use it and they have given us the access to the house for whenever we set our film date. I will be able to get photo's up soon.

Main task - pre production - My idea.

Since the last time me and Ashleigh met up i came away and thought of an idea that we could use for our final film.

My idea...
A successful buisness man is found murdered in his extravagent home in LA. His wife and young child find him laying on the floor. He runs a the most sucusseful car dealer buissness for miles around and has many rivals within the buisness. On the night of his murder, hours before, he goes out with some work collegues for a meal and drinks. His wife and child are in bed by the time he comes in and they don't hear and disturbances. Suddenly, after his death, it comes to light that the man was involved in drug deals annd other such crimes to try and make up the money that he lost in gambling and the stock market. A private detective is hired by the wife to find out the murder. The man's past and recent activities as well as sucessfull buisness leave lots of people with the moative to kill...

Main task - pre production - Film noir - roles and ideas.

Me and Ashleigh got together and started planning our version of a film noir. This is what we came up with:

Roles
Director: Myself.
Producer: Ashleigh.
Lighting: Ashleigh.
Editing: Myself.
Artwork: Myself and Ashleigh.

Ideas
Opening scenes:
-Murder has happened.
-Time lapse, shows the murder happing.
-Fade out.
-Back to the beginning.
Opening titles:
-Type writer, man puts cigarete down, shadow falls across the type writer.
-The names appear on the sheet of paper as the man types.

This is all we have so far.

Main task - pre production -The big sleep - Research.

In media with Mr. Sheppard we sat and watched 'The Big Sleep' opening scenes to identify conventions within film noir to see what we can put into our own films. We got a sheet with some questions so that we could make accurate notes on things that we need to know:

What is the story about and how does it convey the story to the audience?
A private detective that is employed to sort out a black mail problem of a rich old man who is in a wheelchair. There are two young women in the house, they are described as a part of the problem of the black mail, his daughters. The detctive needs to solve the problem of the person black mailing the old man and to stop it happing as well. This is conveyed throught the detective going to the house, the daughters being a heavy presence towards him. The dective also introduces himself as a private detective and then we see the slips of paper that refer to the black mailing.

What production techniques are used to bring this film to life?
-Non-diegetic, loud music to show intensity. This is found in the opening titles.
-Back lighting to emphasise the time of day and key lighting on the characters to make them more obvious to the audience.
-Camera shots were blurred and narrowed on women to make them more beautiful.
-Shadows, music and props such as cigarettes make the film more realistic and stays true to the continuity of the films.

How is it a conventional film noir?
Within just the opening sequence of 'The Big Sleep' there are many things that are conveyed to the audience so that we can tell it is conventional film noir:
-Black and white.
-Private detective character as our main male lead.
-Smoking.
-Sillohets/shadows.
-Opening titles.

What sort of props are used and why?
Props are used in all films to help convey to the audience the setting or the narrative. In 'The Big Sleep' the following props are used in the opening scenes to just that:
-Cigarettes, a thing that everyone did at that time.
-Big houses in lovely locations, shows the wealth and the different worlld that some people get to live in. Normally to show the difference between the detective and the people employing him.
-Wheelchair, this is to show that although the rich chracter (in this case the old man) has all the money, he is still dependant on others for help.
-Alcohol, this was another thing that would have been usual back in the time. It is also showing that the chracters that are drinking are cool and sexy.

Where is the setting, why do you think this setting has been used and how is the setting being portrayed on screen?
A big house in  America is being used, the main dialogue is taking place in a green house sort of thing. However the overall setting of the big house, is to portray the afliantual nature of the upper-class the world that the main character finds himself in compared to his possible complete oppsite way of life.

Why do you think, in an era that had discovered colour film (first colour film was 'Gone with the wind' in 1939) this film is in black and white? What effect does this have on the audience?
The effect is that it is showing the way it is done int he old age. It makes a statement that this is supposed to be like a black and white detective case. Also it is easier for the director and lighting crew to create the mysterious look of a crime that they need to convey to the audience.

What sort of titlting and music is used throughout?
There is music with the openign titles that is slow, this builds the suspence that the audience need to so that they can correspond this to other crime films that they may have seen before. It also shows that the openign titles are very much staged (not within the film) to make it further obvious that they are not apart of a film, other then releasing the information of some names to the audience.

Who are the main chracters and how are they are portrayed?
The male lead is our private detective. He is handsom and confident. He both smokes and drinks, instantly making this a cool and sexy thing for someone of this age to do. This means he becomes a role model to all other men.
The females in the opening scenes are two very different yet in some ways similar to each other. They appear to be the daughters of the old man that is being black mailed. They both talk to the detective however the first (youngest) of the two appears in a very short tennis outfit and the shot we first see her in, the majority of it is taken up by her legs. You can see she is the youth of the family as she is flirtaious with the detective. However the other sister is not in this type of costume and is talking to the detective about her father. She also drinks and smokes making this sexy and cool and appearing as a role model to women watching the film.

How would you describe the lighting used and what time of day is it filmed at?
The lighting seems to be slightly more than normally. Just highlighting the chracters against the setting. It's not very strong so does not make anything completely jump out at you. It appears to be shot during the day.

What sort of costumes are used for the main characters and what does this say about their characters?
The detective wears a simple suit with a white shirt and a black tie. He accompinies this with a hat when he is outside, there is a plain white handkercheif sticking out of his breast pocket of his suit. The shirt looks neat and clean however as though a little worn and possible second hand. This makes it look like he wants to be neat so that he can get a job, however he may have money issues as he has not had many job recently so he can't afford to buy a new shirt.
